"I’m not going to lie, I ‘keep up’ with the Kardashians. I will watch the show whenever it is on… unless I have seen an episode more than three times because Kris Jenner is too annoying."

"Keeping up with the Kardashians" annoying or guilty pleasure?

I let out an exasperated sigh as I threw down my remote control after a recent channel surfing session that left me particularly disappointed. I could not help but begin thinking that television today is no more than a collection of reality shows that display extremely poor taste along with serving no real purpose.

One certain show that caught my eye as being especially pointless is “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” It turns out there will be yet another addition to the Kardashian craze with the brand new series “Kourtney & Kim Take New York.” Why in the world we should care what the Kardashian sisters are up to on a daily basis?

Diana Dudek, senior finance student, had no problem admitting that she watches the show on a relatively frequent basis.

“I’m not going to lie, I ‘keep up’ with the Kardashians,” said Dudek. “I will watch the show whenever it is on… unless I have seen an episode more than three times because Kris Jenner is too annoying.”

Kristen, also known as Kris Jenner, is the ex-wife of Robert Kardashian. Considering the prominence of the Kardashian daughters, it is surprising how very few viewers are actually aware that the original source of the family’s fame and recognition can be traced back to Robert’s prior duty as the defense lawyer during the infamous O.J. Simpson trial.

“The family is honestly fascinating because no one has any idea how they got so famous,” Dudek said. “I don't buy any of their products or support their brand in any way but yet still can't help but watch their show.”

With the recent news of Kim Kardashian’s troubled marriage that lasted all of only 72 days, one can’t help but consider the notion that these Hollywood icons are only in it for the attention. In my opinion, these individuals have successfully tricked us, as viewers, into helping them monopolize the Kardashian brand. Surely there must be other things out there that are much more deserving of our attention than watching these spoiled brats soaking in their father’s wealth.

The fact that we willingly continue to supply a boost for these celebrities’ already bulging egos says a lot about where our society is headed. If this is a sign of things to come, there may be a need for concern regarding the fate of future generations. We may wind up becoming a nation whose primary concern lies in what our favorite celebrities are eating for breakfast…but not me. I’m going to continue to let my voice be heard on the matter.
